BALTIMORE -- There are special
moments when people look back and evaluate a life or an era:
birthdays, class reunions, holidays, anniversaries. Time is, after
all, simply the stringing together of a number of events, some
small, others significant. These events can speed by quickly, but
each one can have an effect on the greater whole. A lifetime of
seemingly mundane events can pass in what seems like the blink of an
eye until one looks back to examine them and realizes just how
much has filled the space.

Higher blood-sugar levels, even those well short of diabetes, seem to raise the risk of developing dementia, a major new study finds. Researchers say it suggests a novel way to try to prevent Alzheimer's disease

Illinois Dept. on Aging seeking nominations for Senior Hall of Fame
Nomination deadline is Aug. 19; winners
announced later this year
SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois
Department on Aging Director John K. Holton, Ph.D., is urging people
to nominate older adults for the 2013 Illinois Senior Hall of Fame
awards. The annual awards, established in 1994 by the General
Assembly, recognize residents of the state who are age 65 and older
and excel in the categories of community service, education,
performance or graphic arts, and the labor force. Since its start,
87 people have been inducted into the Senior Hall of Fame. (Click

Scammers play on health care law confusion
OAK PARK -- The Affordable Care
Act has attracted a lot of media attention and many misconceptions
about what it does and does not do. Anytime there is a big change or
public confusion, scammers will jump on that confusion, says a
recent "Fraud Alert" from
AgeOptions, a nonprofit organization. Scammers are calling
people and saying that they must sign up for health insurance
because of the ACA, the announcement says. It warns that these
